Judge Lonnie Thompson’s inspiring journey from his humble beginnings in South Memphis to his distinguished role on the General Sessions Court bench stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice and public service. After graduating from Oberlin College (Piano and Political Science Major) and Georgetown Law School, Judge Thompson gained valuable experience as a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill in Washington and as a federal law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Odell Horton, laying a strong foundation for his judicial career.
Throughout his tenure, Judge Thompson has demonstrated a steadfast dedication to fairness and the rule of law. Known for his thoughtful decision-making and approachable demeanor, he has earned the respect of colleagues, attorneys, and citizens alike. His work on the bench is characterized by a balanced perspective and a sincere desire to ensure that every individual is heard and treated with dignity.
Now serving as President of the Tennessee General Sessions Judges Conference, Judge Thompson is recognized as a champion for courtroom efficiency and community education. His innovative case management techniques have helped reduce delays, ensuring fair and timely outcomes for the people of Shelby County. Under his leadership, the court has implemented programs aimed at increasing accessibility and transparency, making the justice system more responsive to the community’s needs.
Outside of the courtroom, his dedication continues each Sunday as Organist for Greater Imani Church, reflecting his deep investment in the Memphis community. Judge Thompson is also involved in numerous civic initiatives, volunteering his time to mentor young people and support local nonprofits. His commitment extends beyond legal service, embodying the values of compassion, integrity, and civic responsibility.
